Potential VoIP regulations create challenges for the technology

Over the last decade, the use of VoIP phone services has risen in both the consumer and business realms. From popular systems like Skype to a more intricate, business wide solutions, internet based communication is picking up steam. However, as with any solution that starts gaining a bigger piece of the pie, regulations are sure to come down the pipeline, but it is not as easy as some people would think.

A recent IT Web article examined some of these challenges in a recent article. The piece points out that there is no precedent for how the introduction of VoIP should be handled. This leads to problems with legislators as they write and try to pass laws without understanding or settling the issues that are associated with them.

"As a result, popular business and residential VOIP providers are now subject to different laws and limitations all over the world," the article reads. "And this makes it doubly hard for legislators to come up with any cohesive set of laws or definitions by which to regulate service providers."

A Lexology blog post looked at the issue from a business standpoint and said there are some things that companies should be doing to stay safe. For instance, there are ways to configure a VoIP system so it falls outside of, or is exempt from, certain restrictions.
